I · Leonardo

I Leonardo

I·Leonardo

For this book, Steadman became Leonardo da Vinci. He retraced the artist's life from the time he was born to the time he realized there was nothing else. Throughout his journey Steadman discovered the human being through Leonardo's inventions, paintings and thoughts. This book is considered to be one of the high points of Ralph Steadman's career. This paperback edition published in 1988 by Pan Books, Ltd. Each book is signed by Ralph Steadman.

Signed paperback. $60.00

Untrodden Grapes

Let's face it: If anyone could claim to know wine, it would be Ralph Steadman. The man has tromped through the vineyards, smelled the air and sampled the work of wineries on five continents.

That is why Mr. Steadman is quite pleased to announce the release of his latest book, "Untrodden Grapes." So pleased, in fact, that he's taken to walking about the shores of his sceptred isle with a copy of the book and a rather silly hat, all in the hope that someone — anyone! — will ask him about it.

We'll save you the trouble: Mr. Steadman has followed his previous book on the subject — the award-winning "The Grapes of Ralph" — with another delightful sampling of his work. From California to Chile, from Cabernet to Chardonnay, Mr. Steadman has traveled the world of wine, and he's more than happy to bring you along. His keen eye, sparkling wit and amazing art will make you glad you took the trip.

And don't worry about things getting all wine snobby on you. After all, this is the man who once wrote — and we're taking this dreadfully out of context — "If someone is describing the notes of raspberry, wide swathes of apricot vapours and pomegranate overtones- and they are wearing a suit, then pour your glass of whatever over them and say, ‘Appreciate that!’"

So if you like wine, wonderful writing or absolutely brilliant artwork, we'd suggest that you carry yourselves down to your local bookseller (or Amazon.com) and let them know that you'd like a copy of "Untrodden Grapes." Tell them Ralph sent you, and that he'd like to take off the hat.

This book is my attempt to discover the origins of distillation, from as far back as 6000 BC, when originally the process was used to extract the quintessential healing powers of natural raw materials present in all living matter. These distilled elixirs became soothing balms of great power medicinally, and many are used in such a way still, to the financial benefit of Drug Companies. There is, however, another side to everything in nature and rich nectars for the attainment of pleasing hallucinations and terrifying nightmares, is a dimension of the same source. Use and abuse go hand in hand. Mainly though, my book concentrates on the Dionesian principle of pleasure. Such wonderfully potent creations have been given to the world, what can one do but celebrate these ingenious miracles of man, and acknowledge the funny side too? Should be enjoyed sipping one of the finest of Single malts produced by the most hard bitten of human creatures.

Sorry, but we're SOLD OUT. You might be able to find some copies on E-Bay and other places.

"The Milldenhall Treasure"
by George Orwell, Ralph Steadman (Illustrator)

First hardback edition, published by Jonathan Cape, London, 1999. Signed in ink by Ralph Steadman.

Signed hardback: $60.00

Ralph STEADMAN has attacked one of Roald DAHL`s stories with a difference. DAHL is best known for his wild and wonky stories for children like "James and the Giant Peach" and "The Witches", stories about Chocolate Factories and ghastly stuff that children like to read about like the rotten things that grown-ups like to do but prefer to keep quiet about. His "Tales of the Unexpected" displayed his mastery of the art of storytelling. Little is known of his journalistic ventures when he used to write pieces for the Saturday Evening Post in the 50`s. Such a tale was THE MILDENHALL TREASURE which gave Steadman a dark account of calumny, greed and deceit, good honest toil and Roman Silver to indulge his love of rich, earthy subject matter and get his hands dirty again. This is pastoral GONZO at its best and you must check it out just to verify the fact that Steadman will not repeat himself. He`s movin` on.

Paranoids

Paranoids was an accident. It happened in the heat of a Turkish afternoon. Between the layers of acetate on Polaroid SX70 film there lives a demon of creative wildness and shameless mischief. Fire In the Nuts at night

He came like a thief in the night. Hunter S. Thompson did not want to sign anything. 'People are always asking', he said. 'I'll think about it. I'll come by later', he added. We left it at that and we went back to our loaned cabin along the Woody Creek Road, a kind gesture compliments of Hunter's neighbor and friend, George Stranahan. There was no sign of Hunter by 3:30 a.m. We decided to go to bed. But I knew Hunter would show up, so I left the pages to be signed on the kitchen table, with a pen. There was commotion and horn honking at about 4 a.m. I knew I was right. Later Hunter told "There was a bear in the road". I turned over and went back to sleep.

I rose at about 7.30 a.m. and walked sleepily through to the kitchen. On the table was Polo bag. Inside was half a bottle of Chivas Regal, four boxes of cigars, a Gonzo thong, a gold krugerand and a magnum of a precious red wine, a fine and dignified Cabernet Sauvignon, nothing cheap! which we later shared with Hunter's Lawyer, the Sheriff and friends that very next night. There were a couple of scribbled notes in his distinctive handwriting near by. On one note he had written, 'Dear Ralph- Sorry I got lost in the night- I got a flat tire. Please help me to evaluate this profoundly rare wine. Love H'. On a second sheet he had written a list. 'Ralph- lettered sheets. numbered sheets . What else do you need? Ah yes- books signed, etc. - thank you. Hunter S Thompson'. Bless him! he was going to do it!!

He had clipped a smaller yellow piece of paper to the others on which he had scrawled, 'You're welcome- the Fruit Fairy'..... because he had stolen our cantaloupe melon.

So the pages had been gathered up and spirited away into the night like a guilty secret. My ole buddy Hunter would deliver, perversely, but he always delivers. A far more interesting signing than your average run-of-the-mill. Thought you would like to know that; it's a double first for a limited edition.

Ralph Steadman,
November 2nd 2004
